You will disappoint people.

In your life, you’ll disappoint people.

You may be wildly successful, outrageously funny, brilliant and do extraordinary things.

You also will likely disappoint someone, at some time. And the more that you attempt to do, be, and discover, the higher probability that you will not please everyone.

It’s okay to disappoint a couple of people. It’s okay to disappoint a lot of people. It’s even okay to be disappointed in yourself from time to time.

I’m not sure I know anyone that has lived a life without ever disappointing anyone. Dust yourself off, learn as much as you can, and carry on.

Found via The Buried Life, a “league of very ordinary gentleman asking people the question: What Do You Want To Do Before You Die?” I was fortunate to be a part of the Fall taping of an episode in which Duncan attempts to swim from Alcatraz to San Francisco without a wetsuit as one of his bucket list items. (The link takes you to an 8-minute episode on MTV, where you’ll see me teaching someone to swim Alcatraz at the end of last Fall!)

  1. Actually, Sarah, I realize that all our disappointments eventually help us find the path we’ve been trying to figure out. It’s there, simple, perfect and waiting to be discovered but until we’re disappointed with things we’re involved into, it doesn’t show up. And then again, all those who wander are’t lost, are they? Some good motivation to end the day :-)

  2. The strangest feeling is when you disappoint people and amaze people (different groups of people) at the same time with the same work. Anyone who has published a book knows this feeling. If you search on Amazon for your favorite book, you’ll find people who hate it. You just hope that group is in the minority, but know that they will always exist.

  3. When I saw the title, it awakened me even though I’d already known before.
We all knew if we want to become a complete individual we must disappoint people sometimes. But it’s really hard to do especially when the people whom will be disappointed are your close friends or family.
